For some of us, Crash Bandicoot on PlayStation was one of the best games ever created. While it might have been simple in plot, it was absolutely, positively addictive.
Developer Activision was pretty stoked to see fans were still hungry for the Aku Aku masks and Wumpa fruit when Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy debuted last year, after a six-year hiatus of new material.
It was a collection of the first three tiles under the franchise, Crash Bandicoot, Cortex Strikes Back, and Warped.
The game scored some pretty favourable reviews from critics and ended up being the bestselling game on PlayStation 4-exclusive game for 2017. So it should be no surprise that the company would want to continue releasing new material to keep the masses happy.
An online marketing document, titled Licensing Source Book Guide by DHX Brands, reveals that we could be expecting a new game next year.
It reads: “Looking ahead to 2018 Max picks out Crash Bandicoot as one to watch. The new game was a huge success at retail with no marketing spend. Next year it will be going broader (Switch and PC) and there will be another game in 2019.
“Activision have a five-year plan for this and GB eye is delighted to be fully on board for all products.”
So, not only could we be getting some more Crash Bandicoot, but the company wants to make N. Sane Trilogy available for both Nintendo Switch and PC.
The idea of a five-year plan should also get fans excited as we could be in for plenty of new material.
People on social media are pretty happy with the news.
One fan wrote: “That would be a surprise considering it’s I thought it was a PlayStation exclusive. I’d probably pick it up.”
Another said: “My body is definitely ready for some more Crash Bandicoot, I NEED IT!”
The franchise went on a break between 2011 to 2017, with developers admitting they needed to modernize the game format and plot. In 2013, co-creator Andy Gavin told Official PlayStation Magazine: “There’s an opportunity to reset the history and go back to his creation story and the original conflict with Cortex.
“In that context, you could reprise classic Crash 1 and 2’s settings and villains. It would make sense to use a more modern, free-roaming style.
“Given the current Crash games, people forget that he was once cool. Our Crash had a certain whimsical edge to him. Sure, it was goofy – but it wasn’t dumb.”
Maybe this new game next year will give us a reimagined version of the game we all know and love.
